Mineral Wool Insulation For Greater Fire Resistance

When it comes to insulation, you’ll have many different options to choose from. Each type, whether it is a spray on insulation, fiberglass, foam board, or mineral wool insulation has its own uses that it is best designed for. Some are better for attic or roof insulation, while others perform better for wall or basements. Some is made for only soundproofing a room and has very little insulating properties. This type is generally used in interior walls only.

Mineral wool insulation is one the most fire resistant types of insulations on the market. This type is made from a combination of rocks such as basalt or furnace slag. It has been known as rock wool or slag wool insulation as well. It can be purchased in the well known batts, or it can be blown in for attics and crawl spaces. The blown in form is just the regular batts that are fed into a shredder, and then pumped into its required location.

Mineral wool insulation has the same great insulating qualities as fiberglass or spray on cellulose insulation, but tends to be much more fire resistant the most on the market today. This is because of what it is made from…rocks. These rocks have a very high tolerance to heat, so their melting point is also very high.

Mineral wool has a higher ‘R’ value in the batt forms as opposed to it being blown in. When you blow in insulation the ‘R’ value is determined by the thickness of the insulation that is blown in. Therefore, you can create different ‘R’ values for different areas in you home. A garage does not have to have the same ‘R’ value as your attic would have to have. That’s why any type of blown in insulation will always have a lower ‘R’ value then in the batt form, no matter what type it is.
