Closed Cell Foam Insulation Or Open Foam Insulation

When you’re looking to have your home or building insulated with spray foam insulation, you have a couple of product choices. Whether you go with closed foam or open foam insulation, the differences in their make will make a big difference in which one will work best for your needs.

There are a couple big differences in closed cell foam and open cell foam insulation with the first being the actual physical makeup that they are each is made up of. Open foam insulation is made where the foam granules are not completely closed, or bonded tightly to each other. Air fills all the tiny little areas between the foam. This tends to lead to the over all strength of the open foam to be structurally weaker, and less resistant to water forming.

The closed cell foam insulation is also made tiny foam cells, but unlike the open concept, these foam cells are tightly bonded and packed together. They will still have some tiny spaces, by these spaces are filled with a gas that allows for the foam to expand and rise, resulting in a much denser, stronger and water proof insulation.

The weight of each of these different types is also affected by the make up. While open cell foam weighs in at .4 to .5 lb per cubic foot, the heavier, denser closed cell foam insulation is 1.7 lb per cubic foot. You can also find a denser version of the closed cell foam that has a weight or density of 30 to 40 lb per cubic foot.

Another neat aspect of either open or closed cell foam insulation is that it can be sculptured and painted or stained to resemble a wooden molding. Giving you some great options should you go in that directions. It is not highly recommended to paint or stain the open cell foam, as it tends to not hold up as well as the open cell foam insulation.
